Jack Of All Trades?

And master of none? Or so the saying goes...

The adventure bikes on the market today are very competent machines and have the ability to handle a wide range of road and off road situations. I've embraced the adventure style precisely because of this, having previously owned motorcycles that functioned best in a much narrower range of conditions. Want to do a spirited ride on some twisty roads? Ride cross-country in relative comfort? Watch as the pavement ends and feel confident? For me that's the allure of these bikes - they really can do it all. Steve has recently pushed his denial further with the purchase of an adventure bike in advance of this summer's trip. But first, a second Gold Wing...

Steve's second Wing, a 2007, made its trip debut on a "spring breakout" ride in (May, 2017). We headed to Arkansas and the Ozark mountains. Although this wasn't a camping trip, I'm including it here because of it's place in the moto evolution.

We returned to the Smoky Mountain region in May of 2018 and this would be the last big camping trip for Steve on the Gold Wing.

That pretty much wraps up the memory lane tour and brings us to the present and Steve's latest mount. Memorial Day Weekend would be the first camping trip on his BMW GS 1200 and would serve as a shakedown (test run) for the upcoming big ride. Our friend Joel (also on a V-Strom) was also along for the festivities.

And a better shot of Steve's new ride.

We are now 10 days out from departure. Lots of other life and work to deal with before we leave but the to-do list is shrinking by the day. I'm a bit nervous about the length of time away as this is the longest trip of any kind I have ever done. Of course the weather has been another recurring topic as most of the country has seen some of the wettest weather on record for the past few months. I am eagerly watching the Going To The Sun Road status page on the Glacier National Park website, hoping that the road will open in time for us to ride the full length. The earliest the road has opened is June 22 and the latest, prior to this year, has been July 1. Our itinerary has us  in Glacier on Monday, July 1 and as of today, there is still a section of the road that is buried in 30 feet of snow - fingers crossed!
